Where are the Rain Gear products manufactured?

All products provided by Rain gear Pro are manufactured in British Columbia, Canada.

What is the difference between a lined and unlined hurricane rain jacket?

An unlined jacket is made of 400 denier material with a 200 denier liner for added protection. It has one breast pocket that can be used to carry a phone, GPS or anything that needs to be accessed quickly. The pocket is protected by a flap to protect from snow, rain and debris. The jacket is an “outer layer” jacket meant to go over a shirt or jacket. An unlined hood can be added as an optional item.

A lined jacket is made of 400 denier material with Yukon Fleece as a liner throughout the sleeves, body of the jacket and pockets. There are two lined pockets on the jacket, protected by flaps containing snaps to keep out snow, rain and debris. The jacket is an “outer layer” jacket meant to go over a shirt or jacket. An unlined hood can be added as an optional item. The Yukon Fleece is polyester material that doesn’t absorb water; keeps warm if it is wet, and is “non-pill” (doesn’t form little balls).

Where does the material for the products come from?

All material is specially sourced and custom manufactured in the USA and is polyurethane coated Nylon. The material is custom made to stringent specs for waterproofness and “hand”.

Why don’t you have the rain gear produced off shore?

We do not go off shore to produce our product because of quality and performance issues with foreign made products. By controlling the materials we use as well as the manufacturing process, we maintain the highest standard for our customers.

Why do you use polyurethane coated Nylon for your rain gear?

Polyurethane coated nylon is a 100% waterproof material that has industrial strength and tenacity advantages over fashion products such as gortex. This product is designed to perform and stand up under extreme industrial conditions.

What thickness is your material for the rain gear?

A 400 denier “high tenacity” yarn is the thickness used for the rain gear product. The “high tenacity” gives it 50% more strength then regular 400 denier yarn. The inner layer for the shoulders and sleeves is 200 denier material.

Why do you have an “inner layer” in the rain jacket?

An inner layer of 200 denier material is used in the shoulders and sleeves as an “insurance” layer incase the outer fabric is compromised. It gives an added layer of waterproof protection and was designed with the commercial and industrial user in mind. Lumber, metal, sharp objects all poise potential risks to the outer layer fabric.

Why is the raingear material so soft?

The rain gear material is soft and supple because of the polyurethane application process which provides the waterproofness to a high tenacity nylon material. The degree of softness is specific only to Hurricane raingear because of the custom material manufacturing process.

Why don’t you use Gortex?

Gortex is used in the fashion and recreational industry and does not have the durability and performance factors provided by polyurethane coated nylon.

Is your product breathable?

The Polyurethane coated nylon material itself isn’t breathable. Breathable material such as Gortex is used only in the fashion and recreational industry, however does not have the durability and longevity factors for industrial and commercial grade applications. Hurricane raingear is designed to breath through its full cape technology and natural venting action which prevents moisture build up. The vents act as “bellows” to pump moisture out as the user moves around.

Why is your rain gear product larger by fashion standards?

It is important to remember that the rain jacket and rain pants are specially designed as “outer layer” products. They are meant to be worn “on top of” other clothing such as jackets, shirts and pants.

Why do you use snaps and not a zipper to close the rain jacket?

Chrome plated brass snaps are purposely used instead of a zipper because of versatility for venting different areas of the body by unsnapping where you want the venting to occur. It is important to remember that a rain jacket is a “layer” to help deflect rain, snow and wind. Zippers do not provide that same versatility and are not as durable as snaps.
In industrial applications, zippers tend to get bound with sawdust, grit, dirt and other items that inhibit the zipper from working smoothly.

Why don’t you have many pockets on the rain gear?

Hurricane raingear purposely minimizes the pockets as they typically are vulnerable areas for possible leaks. Hurricane raingear is designed for extreme conditions and not for fashion and so maintains this philosophy in its design of products.  Also, because the jacket is designed as an outer layer to be taken off and on, putting things in pockets would not be convenient.

Why don’t you tape your seams on the rain gear?

Hurricane raingear has been specially designed where seams are minimized and placed under the arms verses on the shoulders. All seams are double stitched and do not require tape for protection.

Do you use any glues or welding for seams?

All of the seams are double stitched to provide maximum tear resistance, strength and waterproofness. Glues and welding of materials are not used as they do not provide the same level of durability, strength and waterproofness.

Why is there only two color combinations  for the rain gear?

Red and blue were originally selected because of their high viz qualities.  Red is a natural high viz color, and blue is the only colour that doesn’t occur naturally in the forest.  It is actually very visible when in a forest setting. Being that this is a high end commercial grade product, and increased awareness is being placed on the safety attributes of High visibility, we are very conscious about being “seen” with our product.

Why do you use 3M Scotchlite reflective material on the rain gear?

3M is a proven company that has consistent quality material. Their product is also engineer tested to meet certain retro-reflective properties. We use this reflective material on our raingear and on our Workers Compensation approved raingear that meets stringent British Columbia government regulations for high visibility.

Can you customize the sizing of the rain gear?

We are able to customize rain gear sizing such as extra long sleeves, extra long legs on the Bib pants and other custom requests for an additional charge of $55.00 per change. To custom order, please add each request as a "special order" charge on the products page. For example, if you wanted your Bibbed rainpants 2" longer, you would add the Bibb Pants to your cart, then add a "Special Order" to your cart. If you wanted the Bib Pants to also be size XXLarge, you would add another "Special Order" to your cart. You would then email Raingearpro outlining each specific "Special Order" request.

How do I wash the Rain Gear?

You can wash the Rain Gear either by hand or gentle machine wash.

How do I dry the rain gear?

Your raingear should be hung and air dried. Do not put in the dryer.

Product Definitions

  • Denier – is the weight/thickness of yarn (fabric).
  • PU- is the short form word meaning polyurethane
  • Hi Vis material- reflective material that has a “day and night” component of hi visibility
  • Nylon- Nylon is treated with a polyurethane application and is used for manufacturing the Hurricane rain gear.
  • Polyester- Is used for the front portion of the Rhino Pants and is more chemical resistant than Nylon especially when exposed directly through kneeling in contaminated areas.
  • High Tenacity Yarn- yarn that has enhanced strength to standard yarn and provides an ideal strength to weight ratio for Hurricane products.
  • Hand- describes the softness and suppleness of the material
  • Mullen test- is the test done with a column of water and is used to determine waterproofness of the fabric
  • Double stitching- is the method of providing parallel sewing for superior strength and waterproofness.
  • Full Cape technology- refers to the overlay of material on the back of the rain jacket through which excess heat can escape.
  • Plaquet- refers to the inside flap on the front of the jacket that prevents rain and wind penetration when snapped close.
  • Snaps-  the snaps on the rain jacket are made of chrome plated brass for durability and longevity
  • Venting- refers to the caped design of the jacket where moisture is not allowed to build up in the jacket because of the “bellows” effect of pumping moisture out from within the jacket through the cape system as the user moves around.
  • Outer Layer Design- refers to the rain jacket and rain (bib) pants that are designed as a generous fit to go over existing clothing such as pants, shirts, jackets and boots.
  • Fold closed hood-  is a term used to describe the folding action of the rain jacket hood (optional) that is designed to fold closed when not in use so that it does not fill up with water or snow.
  • Bib Pants- refer to the rain pants that have a high front bib section covering the chest area to protect it from the elements.
  • Soft Finish- is the process of polyurethane application where it is “knifed” on in a multi-pass application process to produce a soft hand product.
  • Yukon Fleece- is a polyester, non-pill material that doesn’t absorb water and maintains its capacity to retain warmth even when wet.
  • Closed Cell Foam- foam that does not absorb water or sweat.
  • Non-pill- refers to a product where the material does not ball up into small material balls of fluff.
  • Red and blue material- Red has natural hi viz qualities where as blue is the only color that does not occur naturally in the forest and is very visible in natural conditions.
  • Coating to coating- refers to the inner layer of fabric that is sewn to the outer layer with the Polyurethane finishes of each layer facing the other. This insures that the “material” face is worn against the skin for added comfort, and not the clammy, tacky feeling that some other products have because their “coated” side of the fabric is worn against the skin.. This type of construction also insures protection of the PU finishes from any external abrasions, scratches or wear and tear.
  • Inner Layer- refers to the double thickness of the Hurricane raingear in the shoulder and sleeves where there is a double layer of material placed coating to coating to add waterproof protection. The outer layer is 400 denier and the inner layer is 200 denier.
  • Waterproofness – The material used for the rain gear is 100% waterproof as a result of the PU application process.
  • Manufacturers defect- A manufacturers defect is considered a defect that has occurred during the manufacturing of the product and does not include damage to the product as a result of improper cleaning, usage and general wear and tear
