A saw pant does not stop a chain the way a shield stops a blow. Nothing you can comfortably wear for ten hours will do that. What a saw pant does is jam the saw.
Worth understanding, because once you know how the pad works you know exactly what ruins it, and that is the part that gets people hurt in gear they thought was fine.
What happens in the fraction of a second
The chain reaches your leg and cuts the outer shell. It has no trouble with that. Underneath the shell is a pad of long, loose Kevlar fibre, and the moment the chain touches it, the teeth catch those fibres and start dragging them out instead of cutting through them.
The fibre goes where the chain goes: around the drive sprocket, into the bar groove, packed into the clutch cover. Within a few inches of travel there is enough material bound up in the drive to stall the chain. The saw stops itself, using your pant as the thing that clogs it.
That is the whole mechanism. It is not padding and it is not armour. It is a deliberate jam.
Why the fibres have to be free to move
Everything about how a pad is built comes back to that one requirement. The fibre has to be able to pull.
Which is why our pads are sewn into the pant as a built-in layer rather than dropped in as a loose insert. A loose insert shifts while you work, and it shifts most when you are moving hardest, which is exactly when you need it sitting where the bar is.
It is also why a badly repaired pant is a dangerous pant. From our own care guide: a repair that stitches through the Kevlar pad stops the fibres from moving, and that lowers cut-through protection. The pant looks mended. The mechanism is dead. If a shop offers to run a line of stitching across the front of your saw pants, say no.
What the TCS number actually means
Cut protection is described by threshold chain speed, or TCS, measured in feet per minute. Four layers of Kevlar gives us the Pro rating of 3,600 ft/min. Six layers gives the ProMax rating of 4,100 ft/min.
Two things follow from that.
First, the number is about chain speed, not about how hard you were unlucky. It is a rating threshold, not a promise about a particular accident. Angle, how long the contact lasts, how sharp the chain is, whether the pad was already contaminated: all of that is real and none of it is in the number.
Second, more layers means more fibre available to pull and jam, which is why 4,100 sits on six layers rather than four. It also means more weight and more heat, which is why the six-layer build is not automatically the right answer. Match it to your exposure.
Where the pad sits, and why the left side gets extra
Geometry decides more outcomes than layer count does, because a pad that is not where the bar went protected nothing.
Most sawyers cut from the left: right hand on the throttle, left hand on the bar. When a saw kicks back or a cut runs away, the chain comes at the front of the legs and at the left side. So every pair we build covers 180° front plus 4 inches on the left side of each leg, sewn in, from above the crotch to the ankle. Above the crotch, because that is where the femoral artery is, and a cut there is the one that does not wait for an ambulance.

What quietly ruins a pad
A pad degrades in ways you cannot see from the outside, because the damage is to the fibre, not to the shell you are looking at. Replace pants or chaps when any of this is true:
- The outer shell has holes or cuts that let bar oil reach the Kevlar pad.
- Wood chips and sawdust have packed down inside the layers.
- A repair has stitched through the pad.
- They have been washed with a bleach-based detergent, which lowers cut-through protection.
- The shell is caked with oil and dirt that will not wash out. Deposits like that affect how the pad performs.
- They have taken an exhaust burn. Heat can fuse the layers together, and fused fibre cannot pull.
And the one that is not a judgement call: any pant or chap with a previous chain nick that reached the Kevlar pad needs replacing immediately. The pad did its job once. It does not get a second turn.
The best time to check is after each use, while you still remember what happened to them. Store them dry and hanging, out of direct sun and heat, and not sitting on top of your saw, bar oil or fuel.
What it cannot do
Cut protection reduces risk. It does not make chainsaw work safe, and no pant we sell will stop a chain in every situation you can create with one. Keep the chain sharp and the saw maintained, follow the safe-work practices your employer requires, and treat the pant as the last line rather than the first.
